With a background in energy and medical device research, Hanseo Kim has developed expertise in nanomaterials, supercapacitors, and their biomedical applications. As a senior at Daegu International School and a researcher at Kyungpook National University, Hanseo's work includes the development of a novel hydrogel patch for detecting muscle activity and fatigue, and a moisture-powered thin-film supercapacitor for carbon capture. He is recognized with awards such as the Korea Minister of Trade, Industry, and Energy Award, and he was also named one of the top high school researchers in South Korea in the 2023 Korea Science & Engineering Fair. His research on a novel supercapacitor that adsorbs carbon dioxide was selected as one of the three projects from South Korea to represent Korea at the 2024 EU Contest for Young Scientist, and Hanseo has made significant contributions to both energy and medical research.

A novel pH-responsive hydrogel patch based on anthocyanin loaded PVA/PEG that colorimetrically detects muscle fatigue

A low-cost, freestanding, disposable, and non-invasive muscle fatigue detection patch is especially crucial for medical and sports applications. Current technology includes complex nano-engineered electronic patches, which are difficult to produce and relatively expensive. Herein, a novel patch fabricated in a relatively simple method, is presented.

This project aims to utilize multiple forms of nanocarbon in tandem to create a novel electrode for transparent supercapacitors. The transparency of the electrode would enable new types of electronic devices such as displays, touch screens, solar cells, computer glasses, wearing and portable electronics, or other highly advanced technological products and could eventually add extra energy storage to smart glasses or cars.
